From Roses the road starts to climb in order to take you through precipitous switch-backs with wonderful views into Cadaqués, at the end of the Cap de Creus peninsula. This is the town where high-rise hotel building was barred during the boom years of Costa hotel speculation, so that it kept its little, narrow streets and whitewashed houses. Barcelona's cultural elite made Cadaqués their favorite summer resort in the 1960s, and it's since been popular with well-heeled bohemians from all over Europe. Consequently, Cadaqués is relatively expensive, but it's still strikingly beautiful, and all around the cape there are tiny, rocky coves offering the chance of complete relaxation. The town's native population, whose ancestors lived for centuries in total isolation from anywhere inland, are well known for their lack of interest in outsiders.
