The first cathedral on this site was founded in the sixth century, but the present one dates from between 1298 and 1430, except for its facade, finally finished in a rather un-Catalan Gothic-revival style in 1913 during the 'rediscovery' of medieval Barcelona. The most striking aspect of the Cathedral is its volume: it has three naves of near-equal width. It contains many images, paintings, and sculptures, and an intricately-carved choir built in the 1390s. The cloister, bathed in light filtered through arches, palms, and fountains, is the most attractive section of the Cathedral, and an atmospheric retreat from the city. It contains some white geese, for reasons that seem to have been lost in history, although the most common explanation is that they represent the purity of Santa Eulàlia.
