The most interesting and vibrant Catalan city after Barcelona, Girona's origins go way back: it was one of the first Paleolithic farming communities in the region, a major trading town under the Romans, and a flourishing center throughout the Middle Ages. Its legacy from that era is one of the most impressive collection of medieval buildings in Catalonia. The magnificent Cathedral, built from the eleventh to the fifteenth centuries, has a Romanesque cloister, a soaring Gothic nave and a five-storey tower. From the main facade, 90 steep steps lead down to the main street and the river Onyar, where the buildings packed along the river have been attractively renovated in varied colors. The city today is also a highly active artistic and literary center.
